African Music & Culture
Africa Safari Academy — Netherlands Campus & On Location
Music is how Africa remembers. It carries history, philosophy, ceremony, and joy — across generations, across borders, across languages. To understand African music is to understand something profound about African culture, community, and humanity itself.
Led by Daniel Okiror — musician, storyteller, and cultural practitioner — this workshop brings African music and culture to life. Not as a performance you watch, but as something you participate in, feel, and carry with you.
What the Workshop Covers
- African musical traditions — an introduction to the diversity of African music across regions, including East African rhythms, communal drumming, and call-and-response traditions
- Traditional instruments — hands-on experience with instruments including the djembe, kalimba, and other African percussion and string instruments
- Music and meaning — how African music carries cultural values, spiritual practice, storytelling, and community memory
- Ubuntu and rhythm — the connection between communal music-making and Ubuntu philosophy — how rhythm creates belonging
- African song and storytelling — participating in African song traditions, including call-and-response and oral narrative through music
- Cultural context — situating African music within wider cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts
