About Daniel
Daniel Benon Okiror is a Ugandan-born musician, storyteller, educator, researcher and social entrepreneur based in the Netherlands. For more than two decades he has worked across Uganda, Kenya and the Netherlands — building bridges between Africa and Europe through music, community development, education and intercultural partnership.
Daniel is one of the rare musicians in Europe who performs and teaches across a full range of traditional East and West African instruments. His distinctive Afro-fusion style — rooted in traditional Ateker music and expanded through encounters with Luo, Bantu, West African and contemporary world music traditions — creates a sound that is simultaneously ancient and contemporary, intimate and epic, African and universal.
He holds postgraduate qualifications in Project Planning & Management and African Studies, and is the author of five published and forthcoming books. As Official Cultural Ambassador to the Ateker Iteso Kingdom in the Netherlands and Schengen Region, his performances carry a dimension of cultural diplomacy that few artists can offer.
Why the Daniel Okiror Band Is Unlike Anything Else on the European Stage
The Daniel Okiror Band is a six-piece Afro-fusion ensemble that brings together the ancient and the contemporary, the indigenous and the global, the intimate and the epic — in a single performance that audiences across four continents have described as unlike anything they have experienced before.
At the heart of the band is Daniel himself — a multi-instrumentalist who moves between traditional East and West African instruments with the fluency of someone who has spent a lifetime not just learning these instruments but understanding what they mean.
This is not world music as a genre. This is world music as a philosophy — the belief that every musical tradition has something to teach, and that the most powerful music happens when traditions meet as equals.
The band adapts for intimate theatres, university lectures, community gatherings, festival stages and large outdoor events. Whatever the context, the music speaks — and then Daniel speaks, and the real conversation begins.

Orutu (one-string fiddle, Luo tradition) — the voices of ancestors
Endingidi (tube fiddle, Buganda tradition)
Nyatiti (eight-string lyre, Luo tradition) — one of East Africa’s most ancient instruments
Ngoni (lute, West African griot tradition) — the pan-African story
Guitar — bridging African traditions to contemporary world music

Storytelling as Knowledge
Daniel is not only a musician. He is a storyteller in the deepest African tradition — where story is not entertainment but the primary vehicle through which communities transmit values, history, philosophy and identity across generations.
His storytelling draws on twenty years of lived experience across Uganda, Kenya and the Netherlands — from children living on the streets of Soroti and Kampala, to community centres in Utrecht, to royal ceremonies of the Ateker Iteso Kingdom.
When Daniel tells a story, audiences do not simply learn about Africa. They begin to see the world differently. That shift in perspective is the beginning of partnership.
