Our East Africa Environments
Africa Safari works across four distinct environments in Uganda and Kenya. Each has its own character, community relationships and learning context. Programmes are designed around the participant's background, objectives and the appropriate environment — not every environment provides every programme.
Mombasa, Kenya — Practice
Africa Safari's Kenyan base is rooted in more than two decades of community practice. Mombasa offers engagement with African arts and culture through the Heartbeat Arts Centre, community and social enterprise learning, African hospitality through Akogo House, and the rich cultural and coastal context of the Swahili coast. This is an environment for community practice, organisational learning, cultural exchange and professional experience in an urban African setting.
Soroti, Uganda — Roots
Soroti is where Africa Safari's East African roots run deepest. Grounded in the Teso cultural context and the developing Beats of Hope Akogo Village environment, Soroti offers community and cultural immersion, local knowledge systems, enterprise relationships and learning grounded in the daily life of the Iteso people. This is an environment for those seeking authentic connection, cultural understanding and community-rooted learning.
Kampala / Entebbe, Uganda — Transition & Opportunity
Uganda's capital offers a different kind of learning — urban community practice, youth transition and development, enterprise, leadership and professional exchange. Kampala is where Africa Safari's work intersects with the energy of an African city: organisations, institutions, entrepreneurs and professionals navigating opportunity and change. Entebbe serves as the gateway for international arrivals and programme orientation.
Jinja / Nile, Uganda — Reflection & Convening
Jinja sits at the source of the River Nile — one of the world's great natural landmarks. Africa Safari uses Jinja and its surroundings as a space for leadership reflection, cultural encounter, nature-based experience and group convening. Jinja forms part of appropriate programmes through confirmed partner accommodation and programme arrangements. It is not a permanent Africa Safari placement base.

Africa Safari's Kenya work is centred on Mombasa — a living hub of African community practice, arts and culture, social enterprise and hospitality. Beyond Mombasa, the coast and hinterland offer wildlife, heritage and one of East Africa's most layered cultural histories. Further north, Samburu and Turkana carry ancient traditions of pastoralism, ecology and cultural identity. For those drawn to deep human history, Moru Eloima in Turkana is one of the sites associated with the earliest presence of humankind.

Jinja sits at the source of the River Nile — one of the world's great natural landmarks — and offers white-water rafting, boat trips and extraordinary scenery. Murchison Falls, where the Nile forces through a narrow gorge with tremendous power, is one of East Africa's most dramatic sights. Kidepo Valley National Park, remote and wild in the far north, is widely regarded as one of Africa's finest and least-visited parks.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve — Uganda's largest — offers vast, unhurried wilderness. Lake Bisina is home to rare and remarkable birdlife, including the Teso Hornbill. At Orungo, rare yellow and white monkeys inhabit the landscape in one of the region's most unusual and little-known wildlife encounters. Moru Okiror offers jungle walks through terrain of quiet beauty — off any tourist map and known only through local connection.
The Ateker region carries one of East Africa's richest and least-known cultural heritages. Here you can:
- Visit the Palace of Emorimor — the seat of the Iteso Kingdom and the home of Papa Iteso, the father of the Iteso people — a living centre of traditional authority and cultural identity
- Walk through Ere Iteso — the heartland of the Iteso — and experience traditional Iteso homesteads as they have been kept across generations: the architecture, the arrangement of family life, the rhythms of daily existence rooted in community and land
- Dance alongside the Karamojong at Moroto — in the open air, in the streets, where music and movement are simply part of daily life
- Learn to play the Adungu (bow harp) and Akogo (thumb piano) from musicians who learned from their grandparents — in the communities where these instruments were born
- Sit with elders in the Manyattas of Moru Too and listen to creation stories that have shaped the identity of an entire people across generations
- Engage with the etunganane system — the Teso model of democratic, clan-based collective leadership rooted in Ubuntu, where every clan holds the right to produce a king
- Meet and interact with Ate kings and cultural custodians through Africa Safari's unique connections to the Iteso Kingdom
- Visit ETOP Radio — a community voice rooted in the Ateker region — and engage with local media, storytelling and public communication
- Experience the Emaali Cultural Festival, where the living traditions of the Ateker peoples are celebrated in music, dance, ceremony and community
The Ateker Indigenous Knowledge Corridor
Stretching across the borderlands of Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia, the Ateker peoples — Iteso, Kumam, Langi, Karamojong, Nyangatom, Turkana, Toposa, Bari, Toroit and others — share one of Africa's most interconnected and least-documented knowledge traditions. Alongside them, the Maasai and Samburu carry living systems of ecology, governance, medicine, music and cosmology that have sustained communities for millennia.
Africa Safari offers a rare guided encounter with this living knowledge — not as museum exhibit, but as living, breathing culture.

How It Works
Rather than creating its own projects in every location, Africa Safari builds a carefully curated Regional Learning Network of trusted African-led organisations. Participants experience Africa through authentic relationships rather than pre-designed programmes.
Every journey combines learning, hospitality, research, tourism and professional exchange while generating income for African partner organisations and communities.
Participants do not arrive as visitors. They arrive as learners and partners. Africa Safari does not begin with programmes. It begins with relationships.
Regional Learning Network
Uganda and Kenya are Africa Safari's current principal operational destinations, where our own projects, infrastructure and established relationships provide the foundation for every programme.
Our Regional Learning Network is being developed through carefully selected relationships across East and Central Africa. Additional destinations become available only as partnerships, safeguarding frameworks and delivery arrangements have been established and verified. We do not operate in a country until we can stand behind every element of the experience.
Become a Regional Learning Partner
Africa Safari works with selected African-led organisations, enterprises, institutions, educators and community and cultural initiatives that can offer meaningful learning environments for international students, interns, volunteers, professionals, researchers and institutional groups.
Partners keep their own identity and independence. Depending on the programme, collaboration may include hosting placements, contributing professional expertise, receiving learning groups, participating in research or Academy programmes, cultural exchange, delegations or other Africa–Europe opportunities. Relationships can develop in both directions — African partners may also gain routes into European networks, Academy programmes, the Festival and Expo, and institutional connections where appropriate.
