Live & Learn in East Africa
Live & Learn in East Africa
Volunteer · Intern · Study · Professional Placement
Live & Learn in East Africa is Africa Safari’s structured placement programme — a real, supported period of living, working and learning in East Africa. It is not a holiday and not a short visit. It is a genuine contribution: to a community, to an organisation, and to yourself.
Placements are coordinated by Africa Safari and matched to each participant’s background, skills, learning objectives and goals. Programme design, location and host organisation depend on the participant’s profile, learning objectives, host readiness, safeguarding requirements and current availability. Full coordination, supervision and safeguarding are in place throughout every placement.
Come to learn. Bring your skills. Build relationships. Create value together.
The Journey
Live & Learn is not simply a placement. It is a structured learning journey that begins before you travel and continues after you return.
Prepare. Before your programme begins, Africa Safari Academy provides orientation in the cultural context, learning objectives, safeguarding expectations and responsible contribution principles relevant to your placement. For participants based in or passing through Europe, this preparation can take place through Africa Safari Academy in Utrecht. Preparation may also be completed remotely, depending on your location and programme design. Physical attendance in Utrecht is not required for every participant.
Match. You are matched to an appropriate East African learning and practice environment based on your background, skills, experience, learning objectives and the available host and supervisory capacity at the time of your programme. Not every participant is placed in every location. Placement environments are selected for suitability, not simply convenience.
Learn & Contribute. You live and work within the matched environment, learning alongside African practitioners, community members, professionals and organisations. Africa Safari coordinates your placement throughout, with local support, ongoing supervision and safeguarding in place. The knowledge and expertise you encounter here flows in both directions — African practitioners, knowledge holders and professionals are teachers and mentors, not simply hosts.
Reflect. Structured reflection is part of the programme. A mid-placement welfare and learning check-in and a closing reflection session help you consolidate what you have experienced and consider how it connects to your wider professional or personal development.
Continue. The relationship does not end when you return. Appropriate participants can remain connected through Africa Safari Academy, ongoing professional or community relationships, future exchanges and the wider Africa Safari network. Africa Safari is an Africa–Europe platform: learning and relationship-building run in both directions, and alumni are part of that ongoing connection.
Who This Is For
- Volunteers — individuals, church groups, retirees and professionals wanting to give time and skills in a structured, supervised environment
- Interns — students and graduates seeking structured professional experience in East Africa, matched to their field of study or professional background
- Study placements — university students completing field research, dissertations or international modules, with support for academic and institutional requirements
- Professional placements — experienced professionals in education, health, social work, enterprise, the arts or other fields seeking a meaningful period of professional exchange and contribution in an African-led context
Professional & Executive Placements
Live & Learn is not limited to student internships or volunteering. Experienced professionals can undertake a structured period of professional exchange — working alongside African-led organisations, contributing expertise, observing and learning from African community practice, and building relationships of genuine mutual value. If you are a professional, researcher or executive considering East Africa as a context for professional development, leadership learning or meaningful contribution, we would like to hear from you. Your placement will be designed around what you bring and what is genuinely useful to the host environment.
Our East Africa Environments
Africa Safari works across four distinct environments in Uganda and Kenya. Each has its own character and learning context. Not every participant is placed in every environment — location is matched to the participant, the programme purpose and current host readiness.
- Mombasa, Kenya — Practice: Community practice, African arts and culture, social enterprise and hospitality. Africa Safari’s Kenyan base includes the Heartbeat Arts Centre and Akogo House hospitality environment on the Swahili coast.
- Kampala / Entebbe, Uganda — Transition & Opportunity: Urban community practice, youth transition and development, enterprise, leadership and professional exchange in Uganda’s capital. Entebbe serves as the international gateway and orientation base.
- Soroti, Uganda — Roots: Community and cultural immersion grounded in the Teso context and the developing Beats of Hope Akogo Village environment. Local knowledge systems, enterprise relationships and community-rooted learning.
- Jinja / Nile, Uganda — Reflection & Convening: Culture, nature, leadership and reflection through appropriate programme and partner accommodation arrangements. Jinja is not a permanent Africa Safari placement base but forms part of appropriate programmes.

Safeguarding Commitment
Africa Safari takes safeguarding seriously. Where placements involve contact with children or vulnerable young people through Beats of Hope Africa or partner organisations, all participants undergo appropriate screening, are assigned supervised roles, and work within our established safeguarding framework. Short-term visitors are never positioned as primary caregivers.
Groups & Institutional Cohorts
Universities, professional organisations, companies, churches and NGOs can place cohorts of students or staff through Africa Safari’s Institutional & Group Programme pathway. If you are coordinating a group placement, see our Institutional & Group Programmes information or contact us directly.
Live & Learn in East Africa is part of the Africa Safari East Africa Experiences family. Many participants begin with the 6-day Taste of East Africa journey before committing to a longer placement.
